These two natural elements singularly, rather jointly, sit atop the crown of the ocean’s treasure trove of hidden aqueous jewels.
Both are produced under the salty waves, and both are evocative of luxe glamor and splendid riches of the sea.
One is the actual organism, abandoned and polished, its spidery fingers reaching upwards to light. In shades of white, grey, red, pink, coral–its namesake– and even black, coral makes an edgy and on-trend appearance in jewellery and clothing.
The other, the pearl, an irridescent, milky by-product of discomfort, with a grain of sand causing the bi-valve to coat its ‘itch’ with nacre, the pearl is the currency of dreams, some individual South Seas ones so highly valued you could buy a house (Tiffany’s current building in New York) or even a country for its price.
Its no wonder ancient Polynesians regarded pearls and coral as legal tender wearing them on their clothing and ceremonial pieces to signify prestige and rank in the tribe.
Today little gossip girls are paring them and piling them high like trust-fund mergirls. For impact wear only a simple black number and let the jewels of the sea glimmer–nothing suits skin like a pearl.
