Where in the world can you find beaches in a girl’s favorite color, pink?

Beaches in rosy, pink, powdery sand, you say?

It sounds like a pink dream come true!

Bermuda crops up with its most famous beach named not for its color but for its shape, Elbow Beach.  Curving around for a mile it looks irridescent with its pinky shimmer against the aquamarine ocean.  Located in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean as some think, its waters run cooler, sometimes running in the low 60′s, making swimming more an adventure than a given destination for winter travellers there.

Lesser known and farther away, tiny Elafonissi island off Crete also has pink sand.  Separated by only a lagoon no more than a yard deep, beach buffs can wade across some 200 yards from the beach to see this thumb-sized paradise for a day-trip visit.

Even further around the globe, in the Indian Ocean in the Seychelles on La Digue at Anse Source D’Argent, there are series of tiny crescents of pink sand beaches.  More home-spun than glamorous, the atmosphere is simple elegance in a tropical setting without the tourist sprawl.

In the Bahamas, Harbour Island off North Eleuthera is perhaps the most famous of all pink sand beaches with its 3 mile long beach between 50 and 100 feet wide, brimming with its same rosy combination of broken bits of coral, shells, clams, sea urchins, rocks, calcium carbonate deposits left from tiny marine invertebrates, and most importantly minute single-cell organisms called Foraminafera.

This microscopic shelled animal is plentiful in the ocean and has a bright red or pink shell full of holes through which it extends its ‘foot’ called pseudopodia to attach and feed on the underside of reefs, on rocks, on the sea floor and in caves.  As waves and fish knock Foraminafera free from their ‘toe-hold’ so to speak, they wash up in the gritty concoction we call sand, lending their pinky shells to the unique mix.

For the ultimate girlie getaway, hele your ‘okole over to Pink Sands Resort and book one of the 25 pastel-colored cottages.  Designed by fashion high priestess of pop, Barbara Hukanicki of Biba fame, the 20 acre estate is an oasis of calm pinkness on its bordering pink sand beach.

Pop on your best pink bikini and prepare to glow in the rosy sunset, one toe in the sand and the other on your pink lounger.

Mahalo. Mahalo nui. Thanks from the heart.

As the nation turns its thoughts and minds to giving thanks, Kikidoll is ever aware of all the many people who have been supporters, family and friends who have given so much this past year.

To them all, heartfelt thanks.

Now, for the feast to celebrate!

In Hawaii, Thanksgiving is another chance for the extended ohana to gather for a day of family fun and games, traditions and of course the luau meal, replete with turkey, kalua pig and poi, a purply-grey paste that off-islanders usually hate and locals love.

It is not uncommon to see 150 members of the same ohana at the beach having their Thanksgiving cook-outs; all generations– grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins all playing games and sharing aloha on their guitars called ukeleles.

Some take grills and smoke the turkey beach-side, but the purists are more adventurous and make a pit called an imu to bake the turkey and other meats or fish like mahi-mahi under the sand, on smoldering rocks covered in banana or ti leaves while the bird sizzles, traditional style.

For the at home gathering, try a pineapple juice and mustard glaze on the roasting turkey with a macadamia-nut bread stuffing.  Glazed sweet potatoes of course. Tarts in coconut and pineapple. Sweets in the form of mochi, (sticky flavored rice balls) and manju–a custardy fruit filling on a crispy pastry base, with guava, mango and papaya shave ices rounding up the dessert table.

Share aloha, give thanks, live life!

Happy Thanksgiving.

Kikidoll spied with her little eye Elizabeth Hurley this week at the launch of her new swimwear line for affordable well-designed Spanish fashion house MANGO.

Now married and retired from acting, Hurley has somehow defied the gods and kept as trim as the sails she is rigging in her photos of the new line.  She revealed just how she managed to keep fit, saying she relied on ‘nice photographers and a little digital enhancement. I like a certain amount of retouching like anybody’, she admitted.

Airbrushing or not, the released photos of her modelling her new line show an amazing figure for a 44-year old mother of a six-year old son.

‘Miss Kensington’ appeared demurely in a hot pink dress along side 2 bikini-clad models at the premiere. The next day, in Madrid, she continued the shy-girl approach and wore another dress instead of donning her own creations.  She was heard to have said she dreaded swimwear photo shoots like anyone, and still had two more to go, up ahead. Dread.

Known for her ‘belle poitrine’, Ms. Hurley first caught the world’s attention in 1994 at the film opening, pinned together by giant gold safety pins in a Versace curve-loving black gown, her ample bosom on display, as she was ushered in by then tight squeeze Hugh Grant in his global box office smash Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Estee Lauder grabbed her, and by 1995, plucked, plumped and honed, she became their newest ‘face’ up until 2001. While at Lauder, ‘Pleasures’, ‘Intuition’ ‘Beautiful’, ‘Dazzling’ and ‘Sensuous’ among others were created and launched as she fronted those campaigns.  She later said of her modelling days, “I was far from an ingénue, having had my first modeling job at 29.” Today, Elizabeth continues her 14th year on a non-exclusive basis under contract with Lauder.

Films followed her modelling, such as two Austin Powers ones in 1997 and 1999, but she segued into fashion, launching her own swimline by 2005. Last year she presented the first capsule collection of 12 pieces for MANGO.

This year, there are shades of hottest fuschia, soft peach, popping ‘mango’, cherry red, brown and deep plum, in bikinis, two pieces, one pieces and tunic cover-ups that are mid-priced while still trendy, such as the white cutout swimsuit $50, gold cuff $22, textured cuff $50, fuchsia, tangerine, brown, cherry bikini $70 each, kaftan $140, bag $44, plum bikini $40.

It doesn’t get much more heavenly than this–angels in feathered wings and spangly corsets wafting their ethereal gorgeousness down the pink carpet catwalk at the Lexington Armory.

Just a day ago, 30 of the world’s most perfectly-formed dream goddesses gathered pre-show in black leather jackets and boots and stopped traffic in Times Square, pre-broadcast for the VS 2009 Fashion Show.

Last night in New York, at Victoria’s Secret filming, streamed live on the web by Modelinia, these angelic beings, all uber-models, super- models or mini mega-models in the making–made women blush and men flush as they paraded down the glittery V-shaped stage and showcased the new collection of lingerie, nightwear and loungewear for lingerie-leader VS.

Shrouded in mystery, the would-be and wannabe angels and presenters were kept a secret, with up- to- the- minute daily news coverage of new angels fresh from Angel Boot Camp, who would walk, and whether 12 time-attendee Heidi Klum would be able to shift her post-preggers weight gain (from only 6 weeks ago when she gave birth to baby girl Lou Samuel) quicker than a flap of her angel wings in order to hostess the show.

And Klum bedecked in plum did not disappoint!  ‘I’m definitely one of the heaviest of the 30 girls in the show. And I still have 20 lbs. to go,’ she said. ‘But why not? I like my outfit. I like the way it looks on me.’ Amazing in her fantasmagoric costume, Klumangel was the center of attention, surrounded by decadence, glitz, glamor and fantasy.

This year’s themes were Star Trooper, All Aboard, Pink Planet, Enchanted Forest and Romantic Journey.  OTT and Out of this world!

Stylist Charlotte Stockdale said of the inspiring program:

‘We came up with the idea of this girl who lands from outer space in Paris. She gets on a train that comes to a halt in Pinkland, where pink girls get on and off. Then they go into this fairy-tale forest and little lady bugs and butterflies land on them and vines grow up on their clothes. Then, there’s Tick-Tock Time; the wings in this section are based on clocks — there’s one modeled after a pocket watch with metallic feathers. And she ends up in this regal realm of princess-ness, where the wings have Swarovski jewels and peacock feathers.’

And we haven’t even mentioned the rest of the ‘band of angels’!

Marisa Miller, covergirl of Sports Illustrated Swim issue 2008 appeared in a $3 million dollar diamond studded Fantasy bra studded with more than 150 carats of a girl’s best friend supporting man’s second fave.   She ‘stole’ the show.

Other regular Angels Selita Ebanks, Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes (who was the face for Versace and Valentino) were joined by Brit-angel Rosie Huntington Whitely, known for her luscious Agent Provocateur commercial.

Chanel Iman, throwing her bag into the audience at one point, and newbie Miranda Kerr all walked also. Miranda had just come, in boots made for walking, fresh from Paris Fashion Week where she made the nearly impossible transition from underwear modelling to the catwalk for Balenciaga.

Surprise attendee, Anja Rubik who claimed her friends urged her to show, quipped ‘I usually never do underwear shows, but this is so much fun, so relaxed, so cool, and I heard the Black Eyed Peas were going to be performing. It’s in New York and I live in New York, so I decided to do it! It’s pretty crazy.’

Undone by Klum, at eight months pregnant each, regular Angels Karoline Korkova and Adriana Lima had to step off their pedestals in the Angel throng and be replaced with Emanuela de Paula, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel.

Fergie, an Angel from the city of angels sang with the Peas in an emerald corseted gown fit for Maleficent.

The FROW was also a lofty bunch with designers Zac Posen and Alexander Wang perched near uber-editor Carine Roitfeld and costume designer of SATC fame, Patricia Field.
Airing is scheduled on CBS on December 1 at 10 PM EST when this heavenly band graces every telly in the land.

About Kikidoll
Kikidoll is the eternal beachgirl, and takes her inspiration from the awesome elegance and pristine simplicity of beaches and waves everywhere. She muses on islands, oceans, beaches, shells, flowers, tropical living, travel, design and style, swimming, surfing, her beloved Hawaii nei, the spirit of aloha, iconic symbols and of course the fleeting ‘endless summer’. Most importantly, she frets over what to wear at the beach!
