Name one girl who hasn’t dealt with beach hair frizz. Tangly mess. Stringy, outta control bad hair day hair-dos.

That wind, water and salty air combo wreaks hair demons on all of us around the world, no matter the seven seas.

Caps, hats, scarves, scunchies, tie-backs, even our sunnies perched atop our heads cannot hold, hide or undo the damage from a day at the ocean.

We all love that ‘free as a bird’ feeling with our hair down, naturally, but when we get back to our desks/cities/lives we need help to tame the mane.

Enter conditioners, treatments and masques for sun-drenched hair.

Most hair care firms now sell sunblock and sun treatment product ranges, but somehow those seem too pricey or precious to use on a frequent basis. Good intentions when we are on holiday, but how many of us see those golden bottles glowering at us from non-use once we ‘go urban’?!

If you are ready to splurge, Aveda, the natural and organic cosmetic giant from Minnesota makes a 3-part system of products that combines coconut and palm oils with shea butter and other organic essences. A tube of the citrusy-scented Aveda Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque costs around $25, give or take a grain of sand.

Hair care supremo from France, Phyto makes a whole range that envelopes your tresses in illipe butter, sweet almond oil and sunflower extract with other free radicals. Its Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil is a classic spray that protects and moisturizes for slightly less at about $20 in the 4.2 oz. size.

From England, the greatest de-frizzer of all, John Frieda, whose now cult-classic anti-frizz Frizz-Ease, both day and night serums is practically as much a staple as baby shampoo, makes hard-to-find products in a range aptly named Beach Blonde.
His Smooth Seas Detangling Conditioner mixes up seaweed extracts with wheat germ and sunflower oils in a cool, minty cream that refreshes sun-parched head and scalp. The 10 oz. bottle is a snap at $5.
Find its matching Ocean Waves Sea Spray with real seawater in it and you will not only be amongst the lucky few, you will have paid nearly 10-20 that price since it’s so coveted now that it has been discontinued. (Mr. Frieda, take a note:  we are weeping!)

In the islands we usually take a simpler, and yes, cheaper route to loving our locks–we slather coconut oil, kukui oil and macadamia oil combos in our hair. Greasy, yes, but nourishing, yessirree, and at a price that doesn’t bust the bank!

Take a dollop in your palms and rub from the ends up. Frizz, be gone!
