Grab a board–wind, wake, surf, paddle, skate or sail–and skedaddle yo-sef over to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida 10-12 September for Surf Expo the world’s largest con-fab of board sport aficionados under one roof.

Surf is where the jazziest and most hi-tech gear and garb get test driven. The big players like O’Neill, Quicksilver, Billabong, Burton, Hurley and Volcom roll in like Jaws, taking up booth spaces the size of small villages. Some even come in their own vans and set up shop. The vibe is what you expect–street savvy beachy cool laid back whazzup dude. Woven in and around the hall are demo tanks for all the sports, so you best be ready for a splash or two.

The new kid on the beach is SUP or stand up paddling, and there is a SUP tank here as well to show the moves required to move that surfboard forward with a paddle.

Surf is a show where you can hang loose. Make no mistake the power brokers are here–they’re just wearing boardies and flip-flops.

Wander over to the Sushi Bar and take in the all-day modelling of the 2011 swim collections. Kikidoll is setting up her lauhala beach hut #1661 where she is launching her 2011 Hawaiian island luxury line ‘Honolulu Honi’ for women complete with the sweetest sexiest rash guard this polite side of a wet tee contest.

Also splashing out her Bikini in a Bottle Cruise/Resort collection for Winter 2010/2011, Kikidoll is showing the capsule collection in silver and gold.  Come share the aloha spirit with Kiki in her beach hut!

Surf’s Up, and the winner is…

Zoe Reid of Coventry, England is the winner of a Kikidoll signature printed Aqua Shell string bikini following the contest hosted  in SurfGirl magazine asking for best memories of Hawaii.

Zoe penned this winning entry:

When I think of Hawaii, I think of, beauty, adventure and surfing! I think of beautiful sun kissed people, Gathered on the beach dancing to the sound of a ukele, hibiscus flowers, amazing surf and of amazing endless sunsets with a congregation of siloeted surfers all gathered together to catch some perfect waves. I also think that Hawii of a tranquil place of natures beauty that calms your thaughts clears your mind, be it through surfing or through some other way.

It could not be said better Zoe! Congratulations and look for your parcel in the Royal Mail. And big mahalo and cheers to SurfGirl for promoting this charming homage to our beautiful islands. Aloha!

There is no back beat louder than those heard in Miami.

BOOM!  and the lights are flashing and the music pulsating , and the swim models, tanned and toned and young and lovely as gazelles, are undulating down the catwalk.

Kikidoll’s Number 189 is sashaying in a nano, and her bikini, printed and ruched and draw-stringed in aquas and corals with angelfish in bubbles and seaweed wisps, has passed by. Pose, give face, hip strut, attitude, pivot, snap and swish–it’s over.

Ruffling through the swag bags Kiki found side-less undies (gosh!), hair ties and a brolly.  Out into the Miami night, cocktails and sunsets awaited.  South Beach was literally loaded with the Beautiful People everywhere.

Somewhere in the SoBe night, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit supermodels were swilling calorie-less drinks while fash mag editors stashed more goodies from the shows.  There was more than one Raleigh Hotel signature bath robe seen going walkies. Designers were holed up in private salons and hotel rooms showing their wares off-piste (And pissing off SAF no doubt!) Famous duos were splitting up and some re-joining.  Even a movie star or two popped in for a sneak peek a la FROW action.

And the Swim Week skinny? Girlie is bouncing back big time, and boudoir lingerie is creeping in with lace and bows and frills. Goth and heavy metal, stand down. It’a all about the booty and the best  beach bums in the world were here to prove it.

Miami, me encanta!

Building a lauhala and bamboo beach hut in the middle of Miami Beach was no easy feat for Kikidoll.

First the lauhala and bamboo could not be packed so had to be purchased locally. Luckily for Kikidoll there was a dealer/distributor extraordinaire of bamboo and tiki hut regalia in Florida so a mad dash to Ama Zulu, and Claire’s knowledgeable team loaded up the materials, albeit with some poles sticking out the back! Late on a Saturday, at closing time, a man had to be called in to help split ten foot poles–and he came within minutes! Loving their can-do attitude!

Next you have to factor in the heat. No ocean breezes from South Beach wafted over to the Miami Beach Convention Center, dead center of the island. In a green effort the city officials decided not to switch on its massive AC until the actual Swim Show event so pre-show building days were spent in +100 degrees, with no waves in sight for a dip.

Third, the lauhala and bamboo pitched a wobbly necessitating a swift dose of glue and staples thanks to a helping hand from builders at other booths so large they practically needed their own area codes.

Hut done, and photos of  Kikidoll’s new collection, ‘Honolulou Honi’- an homage to her hometown, framed in bamboo; coral and shells hand carried carefully wrapped in tissue in hand  luggage on display, fresh orchid leis sent from Kiki’s mother in Honolulu, Kiki finally could put her feet up on her matchy-matchy signature pink shell printed canvas sofa complete with soft-as-skin Kikidoll angel fish printed cushions.

Hut sweet hut, at last–and now it’s time for the Swim Show!

About Kikidoll
Kikidoll is the eternal beachgirl, and takes her inspiration from the awesome elegance and pristine simplicity of beaches and waves everywhere. She muses on islands, oceans, beaches, shells, flowers, tropical living, travel, design and style, swimming, surfing, her beloved Hawaii nei, the spirit of aloha, iconic symbols and of course the fleeting ‘endless summer’. Most importantly, she frets over what to wear at the beach!
