What a week–hot, hot and more hot!

Miami was incandescent with heat, both in temps hitting 100 degrees, and on the catwalks and daily fashion shows previewing next year’s swim and beach fashions for all the world’s buyers, press and agents to see.

As in every year, prevalent  themes emerge and others wane–the fash mag editors will be filing those pieces once they kick the sand out of their suitcases– but the overall feel was glamor, vintage and brights, with neon and animal still popping in.

Just two years old, Kikidoll 2012 is channelling an endless summer 70′s surf chick vibe–Day-Glo and Popsicle acid colors in solids and bold tropical flower-child prints; geometric Polynesian tattoo symbols and vintage native artisan crafts inform the signature Hawaiian prints all designed by Kikidoll’s founder Kiki Farmer.

Born in Honolulu, Kiki draws on her idyllic childhood spent on Waikiki Beach, where surrounded by the islands’ lush flora and sea life, she is continually inspired by the pristine elegance and  barefoot chic of living in paradise.

The 2012 swimwear collection features racy pompom edging on cheeky cut bottoms; eyelet -laced  hipster boy-cut shorts; cutaway or laced tanks with interchangeable separate bandeaux and drawstring bustiers. For after-beach wear, resort pieces reference the Hawaiian muu muu in an updated hippie silhouette with bohemian ruching, crochet, eyelet and laced ties.  Beach skirts and silky hoodies to the knee all carry the look from beach to bistro.  With elements of tie-dye, sun-faded plaids,  embroidered appliqués, coconut shell beads and tiny sea shells, mingled with crochet—these make up all the iconic hallmarks of the 70′s laid-back beach style of Waikiki wahines.

There is no back beat louder than those heard in Miami.

BOOM!  and the lights are flashing and the music pulsating , and the swim models, tanned and toned and young and lovely as gazelles, are undulating down the catwalk.

Kikidoll’s Number 189 is sashaying in a nano, and her bikini, printed and ruched and draw-stringed in aquas and corals with angelfish in bubbles and seaweed wisps, has passed by. Pose, give face, hip strut, attitude, pivot, snap and swish–it’s over.

Ruffling through the swag bags Kiki found side-less undies (gosh!), hair ties and a brolly.  Out into the Miami night, cocktails and sunsets awaited.  South Beach was literally loaded with the Beautiful People everywhere.

Somewhere in the SoBe night, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit supermodels were swilling calorie-less drinks while fash mag editors stashed more goodies from the shows.  There was more than one Raleigh Hotel signature bath robe seen going walkies. Designers were holed up in private salons and hotel rooms showing their wares off-piste (And pissing off SAF no doubt!) Famous duos were splitting up and some re-joining.  Even a movie star or two popped in for a sneak peek a la FROW action.

And the Swim Week skinny? Girlie is bouncing back big time, and boudoir lingerie is creeping in with lace and bows and frills. Goth and heavy metal, stand down. It’a all about the booty and the best  beach bums in the world were here to prove it.

Miami, me encanta!

Back at the beach during Miami Swim Week, the sand was hot and the nights hotter. Records showed it was the hottest days ever registered in Miami and talk of heat indices well over 100 degrees was routine.  Never before did those vitamin laced waters go down so quickly as models fainted and make-up melted under the glare of the relentless sun.

Nights were not much cooler and even though cafes and ocean spot venues were throbbing, everyone sought out a fan or a cooling AC blast. Sushi and blue martinis were tucked into like camp food, and maybe it was the heat, but no one felt a thing, until, of course, the morning after when the rush for a Starbies was legion.

With the cameras clicking and the film crews rolling designers threw pool parties and trotted their new lines for 2011 in the sand–in stillettoes.  And these were not shoes made for walking. Not even a sliver of those ubiquitous Loubie red soles could be seen as the models sank in up to their gladiator straps.

The nightlife music in Miami is everywhere and the Latin undertone so engaging, like a heart beat. With the in-your-face combo of food, sun, heat and urban rhythyms, Miami wears a wahine out.

Kikidoll just brushed the sand off her suitcases after a week spent in South Beach, Miami for the largest, oldest and by far most prestigious of the swim shows in the world, Swim Show 2011.

Staged during the Mercedes Benz Swim Week, hotels, beach-side venues, clubs and swanky candle-lit restaurants all play host to global glitz and glitter as supermodels, celebrities, designers, buyers and press all descend to mingle over a couple of  local cocktails por costumbre– those minty/lime mojitos–at pool or beach side, while previewing next year’s fashions for swim and resort wear.

Toney hotels stage showcased fashion shows and events around the clock.  Built alongside The Raleigh, Mercedes Benz erected a tented catwalk in a number of days. Famed for its 1940′s Art Deco decor and one of the- if not the- largest and deepest shaped swimming pools on the beach, the jewel-box Raleigh screams out old Hollywood glamor and style.  Black and white photos of previous guests–Clark Gable, Janet Leigh and the beachiest babe of them all Brigitte Bardot adorn the Raleigh’s walls. Service is on first-name basis, the rooms are jazzed up for the new era of high-tech guests in soft peaches and cream. Munching on their French fries alone is pure pool-side bliss. Kikidoll test-drove a few of her 2011 pieces in the pool with her models during a local shoot there before the hub-bub began, and found it hard to leave their comfort zone.

Down the way at other hotels, The Standard, Mondrian and W, other swim events and showings were buzzing.

Sneak peeks? Neon is hot, ruffles and pretty are strutting their stuff and metallics have fizzled. Bikinis were flirty and sexy and one-pieces were cut out and away. More later, but for now safely deep-six the animal printed tank, in the deep end.

Kikidoll’s Bikini In A Bottle

Whats Kikidoll’s bikini in a bottle all about ?

Kikidoll is preparing to ‘launch’ her capsule Cruise Collection of swimwear for 2010-2011–literally–drifting towards a beach near you sometime this autumn.

Filling 21 bio-degradable sea-worthy bottles each with her newest 21 Hawaiian-inspired printed string bikinis that she just previewed at Miami Swim Week for next year, Kiki is sealing them up, ready for a  voyage of a lifetime.

Releasing them from her native Waikiki Beach, Honolulu next month, Kiki is relying on the very same equatorial currents that guided the Pacific peoples of the Marchesas and Tahiti to the islands of Hawaii several thousands of years ago by canoe and paddle.

It is estimated that each bikini in a bottle, will hit land between 60 and 90 days, using the current map, above, as a guide. Watch this space for updates and photos of the launch and any sightings when they hit landfall. Photos are invited from any lucky beachcombers!

The Southern currents will push the teeny bikinis in a bottle  towards the Pacific rim basin–Australasia and Pacific islands. Northern currents will take the bottles towards the Americas, north, south, Latin and central. The West wind drift will push them towards Europe and the Pacific drift will send some aloha to Canada.

The rule of finders-keepers applies, so get out there in time to scoop up a Kikidoll bikini amongst the shells and treasures of the ocean!

About Kikidoll
Kikidoll is the eternal beachgirl, and takes her inspiration from the awesome elegance and pristine simplicity of beaches and waves everywhere. She muses on islands, oceans, beaches, shells, flowers, tropical living, travel, design and style, swimming, surfing, her beloved Hawaii nei, the spirit of aloha, iconic symbols and of course the fleeting ‘endless summer’. Most importantly, she frets over what to wear at the beach!
