In a quiet moment, remember Pearl.

That sleepy Sunday was called ‘a day of infamy’.

Today it is just a watery memory, the salty tears for those lost now part of the ocean, but an event that forever shaped the island paradise.

How fitting that in ancient history the tribal lore says that Pearl got its name from a maiden princess’s tears turned into pearls as she cried for her lost love.

The pearls and the tears are all gone but the haunting tales of loss remain.

Remember Pearl.  Remember the loss.

These two natural elements singularly, rather jointly, sit atop the crown of the ocean’s treasure trove of hidden aqueous jewels.

Both are produced under the salty waves, and both are evocative of luxe glamor and splendid riches of the sea.

One is the actual organism, abandoned and polished, its spidery fingers reaching upwards to light. In shades of white, grey, red, pink, coral–its namesake– and even black, coral makes an edgy and on-trend appearance in jewellery and clothing.

The other, the pearl, an irridescent, milky by-product of discomfort, with a grain of sand causing the bi-valve to coat its ‘itch’ with nacre, the pearl is the currency of dreams, some individual South Seas ones so highly valued you could buy a house (Tiffany’s current building in New York) or even a country for its price.

Its no wonder ancient Polynesians regarded pearls and coral as legal tender wearing them on their clothing and ceremonial pieces to signify prestige and rank in the tribe.

Today little gossip girls are paring them and piling them high like trust-fund mergirls.  For impact wear only a simple black number and let the jewels of the sea glimmer–nothing suits skin like a pearl.

About Kikidoll
Kikidoll is the eternal beachgirl, and takes her inspiration from the awesome elegance and pristine simplicity of beaches and waves everywhere. She muses on islands, oceans, beaches, shells, flowers, tropical living, travel, design and style, swimming, surfing, her beloved Hawaii nei, the spirit of aloha, iconic symbols and of course the fleeting ‘endless summer’. Most importantly, she frets over what to wear at the beach!
