Almost anywhere in any hemisphere (sorry Oz) Spring and Summer are knocking on the door.
Aside from the requisite cleaning, most of us turn our thoughts to making shifts in our wardrobe–clearing room for the next season, updating the tired bits and adding the newest, on-trend items we can get our hot little mitts on.
But the choices are confusing. Hard or soft? Bullets or lace? Goth or Granny?
On the one hand the fash mags are plum full of black and grey body-con retro 80′s pieces that scream Flash Dance and factory, with industrial, scary metal hardware, and more militaire nods than a platoon headed to Iraq. Certainly footwear is steady on its 6 inch heels and heavily constructed base for continuing this theme. Some of these shoes require a forklift to carry the weight. And cam0–it never goes away, making new strides in shorts and even neon colorways.
Shoulder pads, draped jerseys, leggings and athletic gear are also making strong appearances after a devilish winter reminding us to be ready to cover up. Calling Miss Olivia Newton John, Miss Newton John to the mike.
The ubiquitous boyfriend blazer/leather cropped jacket is still a staple, especially for those pesky rainy festivals and raves. You had better take that pill now if you do not own one or t’other yet. Better yet, borrow that boyfriend’s, for real.
All that hardness is balanced by a juxtaposition to Woodstock-y cotton and lace granny gowns, camis in yesteryear pin tucking and appliqued, embroidered and broderie Anglaise sundresses. Wear those with flippies, ballets or Wellies.
It all depends on where you are wearing these pieces. City? Either works, depending on weather. Country? Floaty wins by a mile; and that urban ghetto look might even get you arrested in some parts. Beach? Either, depending on time of day. The soft, feminine look can be hardened up for clubbing after a day on the sands. That ‘toughie’ leather jacket looks like a perfect antidote to the lace when thrown over a simple cotton dress or tunic.
Who doesn’t love the glint of sunlight as it hones in on an object with the bouncey result a ray of sparkly shimmery light cast from the objet de soleil?
Sunlight on the crest of a wave, the shine of your hair, the sheen of your eyes or the glimmer of your sun-licked skin. Deliciosa.
Then there are the shiny accoutrements you can add, the most common being jewellery and apparel, for more zing. Nothing says sparkle more than diamonds in the sun. Wear this at the beach with your favorite blingtastic bikini–just don’t surf wearing it!
Now there is even permanent glitter for nails by way of acrylic tips. Have fun with the pale pink or disco ball versions that are subtle but shimmery.
If add-ons aren’t your MO, then just wear it. A jewelled tea, a sequined bikini and the best bling of all, your sparkling smile.
You’re good to shine, you crazy diamond girl!
